Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 Advanced Live Production Camera
Designed to work flawlessly with strong SDI video switchers, the Blackmagic Design Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 is now the first studio camera to offer live streaming in addition to pro connections such as 12G-SDI and 10GbE Ethernet. This Ethernet connection lets you craft an SMPTE-style workflow using a single-cable package with PoE, or power over Ethernet, and 12G-SDI output with program return, camera control, talkback, and tally. This new 4K Pro model retains features from the predecessor, including the 7″ touchscreen monitor, HDMI output, Blackmagic Raw recording, HDR support, XLR audio, and Micro Four Thirds lens mount.
Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 Designed for Live Production
Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 is designed for live production but can also be used with a live switcher. This is because it records Blackmagic RAW to USB disks, so it can be used in any scenario in which you use a tripod. It has a large viewfinder of 7″ which makes it ideal for work such as chat shows, television production, broadcast news, sports, education, conference presentations, and even weddings. Side handles, touch screens, and physical controls make tracking shots possible with comfort throughout long periods. It is lightweight, so perfect for changing locations and doing different types of work.
Revolutionary Studio Camera Design
Large broadcasters have utilized expensive studio cameras for many years, and these cameras are also quite large, so not too portable. The characteristic Blackmagic Studio Camera offers all the advantages of a large studio camera because it is essentially a camera combined with a viewfinder, all in one single compact design. Its body is a lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate with innovative technology in a miniaturized design. It has a large 7″ viewfinder, which makes it easy to track and frame. Its camera settings menu has been placed on its touchscreen, combined with knobs for brightness, contrast, and peeping focus. What is more, it comes with a tripod mount and a mounting plate for quick setup.
Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 Gets Cinematic Images in Live Production
The amazing 4K sensor combined with Blackmagic Generation 5 color science gives you the same imaging technology used in digital film cameras, with the capability of producing cinematic images for live production. And, with the built-in DaVinci Resolve primary color corrector combined, it gives you much better images than simple broadcast cameras. The color corrector can even be controlled from the switcher. The camera is equipped with 13 stops of dynamic range, so it carries heavier blacks and whiter whites that are ideal for color correction. Resolution on the sensor means you are getting 4096 x 2160, so this camera works well for a range of both HD and Ultra HD work. The models?to top it off?support from 23.98 up to 60 fps.
Exceptional low-light performance
In advanced cameras, ISO reflects the sensitivity to light of an image sensor. That means as high as the ISO, then so much more gain can be added to make it possible to shoot in natural light, or even at night. Blackmagic Studio Camera is outfitted with gain from -12 dB (100 ISO) up to +36 dB (25,600 ISO) for optimizing the reduction of grain and noise within images whilst keeping the full dynamic range of the sensor. The main native ISO is 400, perfectly ideal for use under studio lighting. Then the secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain can be set from the camera or remotely from a switcher using the SDI or Ethernet remote camera control.
Affordable Photographic Lenses
With the popular MFT lens mount, Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 combines the most affordable photographic lenses. The quality of these lenses is exceptional, designed specifically for high-resolution photography applications. You also enjoy the freedom of adjusting the lens remotely with the active lens mount. Optional focus and zoom demands eliminate the need to reach around for lens zoom and focus. You can adjust a compatible lens from the tripod handles, just like a large studio camera. This means you avoid camera shake when adjusting the lens, and thus can keep tracking shots and operate the camera without taking your hands off the tripod. It provides you with the same feel as you would get with a pricey B4 broadcast lens.
Physical and Touchscreen Controls
Blackmagic Studio Cameras feature physical buttons and knobs as well as touchscreen controls. Knobs on the right side of the camera allow adjusting of the brightness, contrast and focus peaking. The focus peaking knob is very useful because it enables you to fine-tune the detail highlight, so you can get perfect focus as you zoom. The left buttons can assign the zebra, false color, focus peaking, LUTs, and so much more. A function can be selected and changed in the menus. A touchscreen shows all the most important shooting information and menus for all camera settings, LUTs, and personal presets.
Frame Shots with Large 7″ Viewfinder
The Large 7″ resolution screen alters the way you work with the camera, as it is large enough to make framing shots much easier. HDR display with extreme brightness on the Pro model is perfect outside in sunlight. Menus onscreen displays status and record parameters, histograms, focus peaking indicators, levels, frame guides, and much more. You can also apply 3D LUTs for monitoring shots with the color and look in mind. Touchscreens also have menus, and you can load and customize presets for different jobs. The included sunshade folds to shield the screen for transport and is compatible with sunshades for the Blackmagic Studio Viewfinder.
Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 Integrated Tally for On-Air Status
Blackmagic Studio Cameras additionally feature an extremely large tally light that lights red for on-air, green for preview, and orange for ISO recording. This tally light also includes clip-on clear camera numbers, so talent can easily view camera numbers from up to 20 feet away. The Blackmagic Studio Cameras support the SDI tally standard, which is adopted on all the ATEM live production switchers, while ATEM Mini switchers make use of the HDMI tally. This translates to a director cutting between cameras while the tally information is sent back to the cameras through the SDI program return feed, lighting up the tally light on the camera. SDI count eliminates complex wiring so job setup is much faster.
Communicate with the Director via Talkback
Unlike consumer cameras, Blackmagic Studio Cameras feature SDI connections with talkback capabilities so the switcher operator can communicate with cameras during live events. This means the director can talk to the camera operators for guidance in shot selection, thus eliminating the problem wherein all cameras could have the same shot at the same time. All of the models support 3.5mm headsets designed for smartphones, but the Pro models support standard 5-pin XLR broadcast headsets. Talkback uses audio channels 15 and 16 in the SDI connection between the camera and the switcher and also in the program returns from the switcher to the camera. This means any SDI audio-embedded device can be used with talkback.
Strong Broadcast Connections
The Blackmagic Studio cameras have many connections to connect to both consumer and broadcast equipment. All of them are fitted with HDMI and 12G-SDI with talkback, tally, camera control, and record trigger, perfect for the ATEM Mini or ATEM SDI switchers, headphone and mic connections, along with 2 USB-C expansion ports. The advanced Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro models are designed for broadcast workflows so they have 10GBASE?T Ethernet and balanced XLR audio inputs. The 10G Ethernet lets all video, tally, talkback, and camera power via a single connection, so setup is much faster. That’s just like an SMPTE fiber workflow, but using standard Category 6A copper Ethernet cable so it’s much lower cost.
Four Ways to Connect
The Blackmagic Studio Cameras can be connected in a plethora of ways. All of them offer HDMI, so they’re fantastic for an ATEM Mini switcher. The HDMI itself supports video, tally, control, and record triggers, with broadcast-style workflow, using one single HDMI cable. They also have 12G SDI. So you can connect to SDI-based switchers like the ATEM Constellation. On the camera end, there is a 12G?SDI video connection and one for program return. The program return also incorporates tally, talkback, and remote camera control. The Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro models can also make use of 10G Ethernet to get camera video, program return, tally, talkback, camera control, and even power using a regular Cat6A Ethernet cable.
Capture Camera Control at Ultra Low Price via SDI
All Blackmagic Design ATEM switchers can control cameras via a protocol embedded into the camera’s SDI video connections. Setup is easy since all ATEM switchers broadcast control commands from the switcher’s SDI program output to the camera via the SDI program input. Included in this list are tally, lens control, and color correction, and all these are received by every camera. That’s all you do: select the right camera number and it all works. The ATEM Mini switcher can even control Blackmagic Studio Cameras because the HDMI output to the switcher has return data communication that can send control information back to the camera. All this means the camera operator is free to focus on framing shots.
Low-Cost SMPTE Fiber Style Workflow
The Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro models include a camera connection via a single Ethernet cable. Amazingly, that’s all it takes, just plug in and it’s good to go. It is common for traditional broadcast studio cameras to operate over SMPTE fiber to communicate and power the camera, but SMPTE fiber is very expensive. Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro models provide alternative 10G Ethernet so it’s much lower cost. The Ethernet includes all camera video, program return feeds, tally, talkback, camera control, and also power. At the switcher end, the Blackmagic Studio Converter handles all video conversions plus adds power to the Ethernet cable; therefore, you do not have to plug in power to the camera.
Live Streaming for Global Remote Cameras
You can now place cameras almost anywhere in the world because the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro models also are equipped with built-in live streaming. This means you could put a camera out in some remote location and it will generate a H.264 HD live stream over the Internet back to the studio. The camera can be connected to the internet using the onboard Ethernet connection, or you might be using a 4G/5G phone connected to the USB-C port to stream out via remote data. That live stream is received in a studio by an ATEM Streaming bridge, where it’s changed back into video for connection to a switcher. The ATEM Streaming Bridge can even send tally, talkback, and camera control back to the camera.
USB Expansion Port for Accessories
This camera features an extremely fast USB Type-C expansion port so you can record to external disks or connect to a wide range of accessories. By plugging in an external USB flash disk, you can record high-quality 12-bit Blackmagic RAW files that you can edit and color grade later. That means you can simply take your disk to a computer to work, and you don’t have to waste any time with file copying. You can even connect optional focus and zoom demands to enable full lens control of compatible lenses. Furthermore, the USB port will power any phone or disk that’s connected.
Blackmagic RAW Quality
Blackmagic RAW is a new revolutionary format that has been designed to capture and retain the quality of sensor data from your camera. Some file formats, such as H.264, are heavily compressed; they add noise and artifacts that lead to loss of sensor detail. Blackmagic RAW eliminates the problem by getting you stunning images with incredible detail and rich color throughout the whole post-production pipeline. Blackmagic RAW also embeds camera settings as metadata so you can adjust ISO, white balance, and exposure after you shoot in DaVinci Resolve. Plus, the files are small and fast to move around, so editing responsiveness is extraordinary. Only Blackmagic RAW offers you quality like no other, tiny file sizes, and unmatched performance.
XLR Inputs and Built-In Microphones
Blackmagic Studio Cameras feature built-in microphones, so there’s sound included in the design, making setup much faster. Plus, the built-in microphones are shock- and wind-resistant, so you get great sound even in tough conditions. With each microphone placed at the edges of the screen, you get the advantage of the studio camera design for better stereo separation than what is possible on a regular video camera. There’s also a 3.5mm audio input for connecting video camera microphones as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. Professional XLR audio inputs plus a speaker for you to hear your program return audio are included in the Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro model.
World’s Best Camera Audio
Because, most of the time, you’ll find microphones placed near cameras, the best audio ever devised in a studio camera is built into the Pro models. Professional 2-channel balanced XLR inputs support a +24 dBu line level and feature an ultra-low-noise microphone preamplifier with P48 phantom power accompanying an equivalent input noise (E.I.N.) of -131 dBV (A). Then, two 117 dB high dynamic range analog to digital converters. That’s what you get: that’s the kind of high-end audio broadcasters and audio engineers demand. This means any microphone that gets plugged into the XLR inputs will have a higher level of noise than the camera’s audio.
Monitor Program Video
With Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2, you’ll be able to view program video from the switcher at the touch of a button. You can just press the PGM button on the camera, and the viewfinder will switch from the camera display to the program return feed from the switcher and monitor the switcher audio. Program return is a great feature because sometimes on large live shows, camera operators can wait a very long time for their camera to be used, so the program return lets them watch the show while they wait. This thus means that even though it is mounted a long distance from the switcher, there is nothing to worry about as the one operating it will always know what is happening and also be on alert.
Powered by Blackmagic OS
With the advanced Blackmagic OS, you get an intuitive and user-friendly camera operating system based on the latest technology. Truly modern, the Blackmagic OS is where every feature in the camera runs independently to offer slicker control, and the camera powers on virtually instantly. With the same controls and menus, it is identical to other Blackmagic Design cameras, making it easy to move between cameras on set. The interface uses simple tap and swipe gestures to adjust settings, add metadata, and monitor recording status. You have complete control over such advanced camera features as on-screen focus and exposure tools, 3D LUTs, HDR, metadata entry, timecode, Blackmagic RAW settings, and much more.
Supports 3D LUTs for Film Looks
Where Blackmagic RAW files make use of logarithmic film gamma to preserve the camera dynamic range, 3D LUTs can translate images to be more visible on the viewfinder, converting them from looking flat and washed out. This problem is solved by 3D LUTs since they preprocess the image right before it is played on LCD. This way, the recorded film gamma images are converted into nicer-looking images on the LCD. 3D LUTs are also embedded into the Blackmagic RAW files so that they can be used later in the post-production, but they are never baked into the Blackmagic RAW image data, so you can always disable them. This means the 3D LUT is carried along in the Blackmagic RAW file but only used when you enable it.
Localized in 13 Popular Languages
The Blackmagic Studio Cameras are built for global use and now support 13 widely spoken languages. While setting up your camera, you can use it in English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. One can easily switch to a different language by entering the menu settings. When you switch to a new language, everything on the screen, from heads-up displays to setup menus, appears in the new language, and you can switch languages at any time.
Powers from DC or 10G Ethernet
Unlike most cameras, Blackmagic Studio Cameras offer many different power options. All the models have one common 12V DC locking power connector so that the cable is not accidentally pulled out. Additionally, the camera also comes with a power supply and 5 different AC socket adapters for use in various countries. Assuming though that you would be connecting via a single Ethernet cable to the Blackmagic Studio Camera Pro models, all power to the camera and its accessories could be provided by the Ethernet connection. The Blackmagic Studio Converter has a large power supply that adds PoE power to the Ethernet cable so you do not need any power connection to the camera. This is a great solution when there is no power available where the cameras are placed.
Optional Accessories
You can make use of the Focus and Zoom demands to remotely control your compatible lens and the Blackmagic Studio Converter for one Ethernet connection to the camera.
