Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro: Perfect for Continuous Video Recording

The Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro is a new updated 1 RU file-based deck. This model offers similar functionality and control via a professional tape deck in a digital design. Some of the updates accompanying the latest models of HyperDeck Studio include support for 6G-SDI, two additional SD card slots, USB-C recording output, timecode input and output, Ref input and output, a redesigned jog/shuttle wheel, Gigabit Ethernet, and a speaker on the front.

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro

The Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro captures raw video straight with 10-bit 4:2:2 color, either through ProRes or DNxHD compression, and the H.264 compression format for recording on an optional SSD drive that supports the required data speed. With two slots for SSDs, which come in capacities up to 2TB, and two slots for SD cards, it means recording can continue nearly endlessly as the recording automatically switches to one from another as one SSD fills up, while the SD card slots are hot-swappable. The Studio HD contains one 6G-SDI input, two 6G-SDI outputs, a loop-through SDI output, and a dedicated SDI monitor output, together with one HDMI input and one HDMI output, all of which can all send up to DCI 4K. Ports will autodetect the signal, so adapt to whatever SD, HD, or 6G-SDI input is present. The 3-pin XLR timecode input and output allow for the device to be synchronized with other devices and also allow for Daisy to chain with other devices to create a sync chain.

The Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro rackmountable unit is 1 RU and has built-in rackmount ears. It features a heavy jog/shuttle wheel for analog scrubbing, as well as an illuminated front panel button control. RS-422 control is available through the Ref input and output ports for external control. The USB-C port allows the ability to record to external disks and can also be used to connect you to a computer and use it as a source for a web stream. An integrated LCD on the front panel allows you to monitor video and see timecode and transport information.

Perfect for Live Production, Broadcast and Archive

Mastering Recorder

HyperDeck Studio Mastering Recorder

All models record to H.264, ProRes, and DNx files, so are perfect for recording broadcast masters! You can even use PCM or AAC audio, plus the 4K model adds H.265 when recording to Ultra HD files. You get everything you need to send shows to broadcasters and for uploading to YouTube.

ISO Recording

HyperDeck Studio ISO Recording

All models feature timecode and reference generators, with outputs to loop to other HyperDecks. This means you can build a rack of HyperDeck Studios for ISO camera recording, allowing multi-cam editing after live events! You can even sync cameras to the SDI output and the SDI input has a frame sync.

Digital Signage

HyperDeck Studio Digital Signage

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro is perfect for digital signage, as all models have HDMI output for connecting to large-screen TVs and projectors. The built-in sync generator lets you combine multiple HyperDecks for large multiscreen video walls. There’s even FTP for file upload and a protocol for remote control.

Broadcast Archive

HyperDeck Studio Broadcast Archive

HyperDeck Studio supports all SD and HD standards, so it?s ideal for archiving old television shows from broadcast decks such as Digital Betacam, Betacam SP, 1″, U-matic, and VHS. You can even record directly to H.264 to maximize storage. For analog decks, just add a Mini Converter Analog to SDI.

Bright Color LCD Status Display

The Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro features traditional deck-style transport controls and a search dial that handles jog, shuttle, and scroll. The compact LCD shows timecode and transport information, plus a full-color thumbnail preview of the current clip in record or playback. It also shows each card’s recording status, video format, frame rate information, and audio levels on the same display. LCD includes monitoring for video, plus audio level meters, selectable between technically accurate VU or PPM ballistics. HyperDeck Studio is just incredibly fast to use and very easy to learn due to the addition of familiar VTR-style controls with a built-in LCD screen.

Traditional Broadcast Deck Controls

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Traditional Broadcast Deck Controls

HyperDeck Studio includes a traditional broadcast-style control panel that’s very fast to use. Just press the record button and you start recording the video input to a file immediately. You can even select the record file format with the use of the menu as well. It features transport control buttons such as play, rewind, fast forward, previous clip, and next clip, among others. In the Pro models, it has a machined metal search dial with shuttle, jog, and scroll support so you can find clips in a jiffy. Any front panel button is remotely sent to the rear RS-422 remote output for looping control to multiple HyperDecks. The Plus and Pro models also feature a front panel speaker and headphone socket for live audio monitoring.

Records to Common SD Cards and UHS-II Cards

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Supports SD Cards

All HyperDeck Studio models record to common SD cards and UHS-II cards, so no custom or expensive media are required. But they add two SSD slots, so you can use two different types of media. SD cards and SSDs are the perfect choices for broadcast media because they’re small and extremely affordable. Using H.264, the files are so incredibly small that you get very long recordings even on smaller, low-cost cards. And indeed, you can even record to external USB disks. With H.265, you can record up to 58 hours in 2160p60 Ultra HD or as long as 157 hours of H.264 recording in 1080p59.94 on a 1TB card. That’s over 6 days of recording in HD using a single 1TB card.

Dual Media Slots for Non-stop Recording

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Dual Media Slots

All HyperDeck Studio models feature dual media slots for non-stop recording. When the recording card is full, the recording automatically continues onto the next card. That’s nice to record long live events since you can “hot swap” a full card for an empty card and the recording will continue in the other slot. Each slot has a status indicator that displays which card is active, red for record or green for playback. And all of them now record very long file recordings to a single file, for easy file distribution. It can repair easily with every card slot using an individual PCB assembly, which can simply be replaced should it ever wear out from overuse.

Record to External USB-C Media Disks

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Record to External USB-C Media Disks

If you ever find yourself in a scenario where you need to record onto other types of media, it allows you to plug an external flash disk into its USB-C expansion port for recording. USB Type-C flash disks have no practical limits on capacity as they can be any physical size bigger than an SD card or SSD. You can even record to a disk array that you’ll edit out of, so you don’t have to waste time copying files to begin with post-production. Just pop the disk over into a computer and start editing immediately. You can even throw in a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G, with 4 separate SSD media slots, so you can add compatibility with SSD media to the HyperDeck Studio Mini and models. There are even menus on its built-in LCD for managing external disks.

Best ProRes, DNx, and H.264 Files

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HD Pro supports the most-used codecs today. All its models feature the DNx and ProRes file formats. All, however, come with quality levels of H.264 up to full 10-bit 4:2:2 when you’re working in NTSC, PAL, 720p, 1080p, and true 1080i interlaced formats. That means you get tight compression ratios between 60:1 to 285:1 for very small files at full broadcast quality. You can also have uncompressed PCM audio or even AAC audio if you upload your files on YouTube. All models feature support for ExFAT and HFS+ disk formats as well as extended single-file recording durations. The Plus and Pro models also support ProRes 4444, facilitating fill and key playback.

Advanced Broadcast Connections

Model-dependent HyperDeck Studio offers extensive video and audio connections, including 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI, or 12G-SDI. All models include an HDMI connection for connection to televisions and projectors. There’s even a dedicated SDI monitoring output on the Pro and models with on-screen status. The Pro and models include two SDI outputs so you can play ProRes 4444 files, allowing simultaneous fill and key output for keying in live production switchers. The internal timecode and reference generator connections can be looped to sync multiple units for ISO recording. All models even include AC and locking DC power.

Choose from 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI, or 12G-SDI Models

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio SDI Models

Provide support for multiple video standards with multi-rate SDI. It automatically switches video standards on the connections via SDI and HDMI. Be prepared to present in SD, HD, and Ultra HD formats, depending on the model. The NTSC and PAL formats are in SD. For HD, there are the 720p50 and 720p59.94p interlace standards. For 1080i interlaced HD, there are the 1080i50 and 1080i59.94 standards. HyperDeck supports HD formats of 1080p23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60p. HyperDeck can even support 1080PsF formats. In the event HD video is running at 3G-SDI rates, level A and level B are supported by HyperDeck Studio.

Fill and Key Outputs for Broadcast Animations

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Broadcast Animations

ProRes 4444 HD files can be played by the HyperDeck Studio Plus and Pro models to the two separate SDI fill and key outputs. That means you can use the HyperDeck Studio as a graphics clip player for broadcast animation because the ProRes 4444 file’s alpha channel will automatically be converted to the key SDI output for real-time keying in a live production switcher. Imagine running animated lower-third titles and stingers with key channel outputs for infinitely clean multilayered titles. But what’s more, switchers such as the Blackmagic Design ATEM models connect to the HyperDeck Studio via Ethernet for triggering playback synced to transitions.

USB Webcam Output for Video Software

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio USB Webcam

HyperDeck Studio provides webcam support with its USB connection and is available for compatibility with a wide array of computer software. If you are not recording to an external USB disk, you can simply connect the USB of the HyperDeck to a computer to get live video into any video software. The computer is fooled into believing that the HyperDeck is just a common webcam, while it offers a broadcast-quality video source in reality. This ensures total compatibility with any video software and in full resolution 1080 HD quality. HyperDeck Studio’s USB webcam feature works with any video software – including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Skype – or gets live streaming with Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, and more.

Advanced HDR Support and Monitoring 3D LUTs

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio HDR Support

You’ll be ready for the latest feature film workflows with support for advanced HDR standards. All HDR status information is embedded into the SDI connections so downstream equipment can detect when HDR files are played. For the recording, inputs like SDI and HDMI automatically detect the HDR video standards and then tag the files with HDR information. Static metadata PQ and HLG formats are enabled based on the ST2084 standard. Plus, the front panel LCD with greater color gamut for both Rec. 2020 and Rec. 709. HyperDeck Studio Plus and Pro models even let you load a 3D LUT into the monitoring output to add looks or to convert film to video gamma.

Features Professional Multi-Channel SDI Audio

HyperDeck Studio boasts professional multi-channel SDI audio for recording up to 16 channels. When recording from the SDI input, you can select in the menu to record 2, 4, 8, or 16 channels of audio in real-time. With even more space in the SDI monitoring status overlay, you can view at a glance how many channels you have enabled with the audio meter display, and you can even view 2, 4, 8, or 16 channels at once with the audio meters. The proper ballistics are utilized by the audio meters, and you can switch between several VU and PPM meter display options in the LCD menu. HyperDeck Studio is much more than a video recorder, with impressive audio quality.

Rapid Network File Transfer

All models of HyperDeck support remote upload of media files via simple FTP client software. For remote control of a deck, all models use an easy-to-learn, text-based protocol, so you can control your HyperDeck from a simple terminal app such as Telnet to test control commands. Just log into the HyperDeck and then type “play” or “record,” and it will carry out the command. Coupling the control protocol and file transfers with a HyperDeck attached to a large USB Type-C disk array gives you an amazing broadcast server for ingest, media management, and play out.

Traditional RS-422 Broadcast Deck Control

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Traditional RS-422

The most common control interface used on broadcast decks since the early 1980s is the RS-422 protocol. Originally developed by Sony, RS-422 is used on nearly all broadcast equipment. HyperDeck Studio has broad protocol support so that you can connect it directly to broadcast systems. It also supports additional commands for the Advanced Media Protocol for managing disk recorders. When you design your RS-422 control solutions, you’ll recognize you’re connected to a HyperDeck Studio because you’ll find one of the IDs 0xF0E0 in 30/60p, 0xF1E0 in 25/50p, or 0xF2E0 in 24p. The list of remote commands supported is included in the instruction manual, which may be downloaded from our website’s support page.

Embedded Timecode and Sync Generators

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Timecode

All models come with a built-in timecode and sync generator, so you can stack several units for digital signage or multichannel recording. Each HyperDeck has dedicated outputs for reference and timecode, direct from the internal sync and timecode generators. The generators “free run” unless a reference or timecode is connected to the inputs, and then generators will automatically lock. That means you can loop from HyperDeck to HyperDeck to create perfectly timed arrays or recorders.

Blackmagic OS

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Blackmagic OS

The high-performance film and broadcast products design was done for all the functions on HyperDeck Studio, and it alone hosts instant power-on while incorporating powerful features such as an LCD with video, timecode, and audio metering; overlays; menus; fast networking; multi-disk media management; 3D LUTs, plus localizations. You can personalize your HyperDeck Studio through the onscreen LCD menus, and the menus are now support both light and dark modes.

Localized in 13 Popular Languages

HyperDeck Studio is supported in many languages, so you do not have to learn a new language when using it. Supported languages include English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish, and Ukrainian. When you initially power HyperDeck Studio, it will boot into a language selection menu; subsequently, if a new language is desired, it can always be chosen from the LCD menu. Once a language has been selected, the LCD menus will become different, as will the overlays on the SDI monitoring output to the chosen language. All this means HyperDeck Studio is perfect for doing work anywhere in the world.

Use All Video Software and Streaming Sites

HyperDeck Studio HD Pro records files compatible with virtually all post-production software. Plus, if you record in H.264, you can upload files from HyperDeck Studio directly to streaming services such as YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Twitter, and more. You can edit with popular editing software such as DaVinci Resolve, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Avid Media Composer because HyperDeck uses the file formats used within post-production. Even VFX software like Fusion and Adobe After Effects work with the files. Since HyperDeck records to disks formatted on computers, you can just mount the disk on any computer and edit right away without needing to transcode or convert the files.

Built-In Redundancy Keeps You on Air

Because serious broadcasters need redundancy to increase reliability, it is included in HyperDeck Studio to ensure that you stay on the air. With all models featuring dual media slots and the Pro versions featuring four media slots, you could continue broadcasting even if one of the slots became unusable. Furthermore, with the HyperDeck Studio HD Mini model, you get three completely independent recorders in one rack unit, whereas the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus model allows for two independent recorders in one rack unit. All models of HyperDeck also include both AC as well as a locking DC power connection, so you can use the DC connection with an external battery pack for redundant power.

Designed for rack mounting and portability

When you need a portable broadcast solution, the HyperDeck Studio HD Mini model packs most features miniaturized into a beautiful 5-inch-wide compact design that’s only one-third of a rack unit wide. That means you can fit three recorders in a single rack unit. Just hook up to use the optional Teranex Mini Rack Shelf and you can mount the three units side by side, then bolt it into a standard equipment rack. Or you can combine HyperDeck Studio Mini with other modules, like a Teranex Mini Analog to 12G-SDI to convert the input from analog to SDI, all in the same rack, which is perfect for archive work. HyperDeck Studio HD Mini looks great when it’s not rack-mounted and simply used by itself on a desktop.

Compatible with Switchers, Disk Docks and Cameras

Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Compatible Model

Many Blackmagic Design products, such as switchers, cameras, and streaming solutions, may be connected to HyperDeck. Because the Mini and models have no SSD slots, you may connect a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G to share standard SSDs for access to media from other HyperDeck models. The HyperDeck Studio will automatically manage all of your disks for you and record them to the MultiDock. You can even connect the MultiDock with any HyperDeck Studio Pro model just to add extra SSDs and get longer recording times. The HyperDeck Studio proves ideal as a mastering recorder if used with ATEM switchers, clip player with fill and key, or looped-on switcher inputs for ISO recording.
